The Difference Between a Nursing Home and Senior Living Community

Updated: Nov 7

It's often for people to say nursing home instead of senior living community when looking for a home for a senior. Now be aware, nursing homes and senior living communities are not the same.

A nursing home provides 24/7 high-level of care, and a senior living community will provide different care levels based on needs. A retirement home will provide activities of daily living.

Nursing Homes

  • Around the clock monitoring

  • Hospital-like care

  • Provide short rehab care

  • Several therapy services

  • Help with daily tasks

  • Was recently in hospital

Senior Living Communities

  • Provide no to high levels of care

  • Minimal to maximum assistance with daily task

  • Those with social or active lifestyle

  • Can maintain independence

  • Residential setting

  • Permanent stay

If a senior becomes ill or has an injury they typically go from hospital then into a nursing home. Once well enough they can move to a senior living community.
